Johnson Seeds 18th Green

Breeding History
18th Green creeping bentgrass is a variety developed by the Plant Science Department of the University of Manitoba.  It was released on October 30, 1990.

18th Green is a five clone synthetic.  The parental plants for this synthetic were selected out of UM67-10, a germplasm selected for surviving the particularly harsh winter of 1967 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada by Dr. A.C. Ferguson.  The five clones for the 18th Green were selected from UM67-10 in the late summer of 1982, after two years of observation in the field for characteristics such as dark green colour, high stem and leaf number, uniform plant size (medium) and upright seedhead production.  The breeders were Dr. K.W. Clark, Mr. D.J. Cattani and Mr. K.C. Bamford.  These plants were vegetatively propagated and put into replicated crossing block (Synthetic) and in 1984 seed was harvested.  A space planted seed production nursery was planted out using this seed in 1986.  In 1987, this nursery was rogued to remove off type plants to insure the uniformity of 18th Green.  Seed was harvested in 1987, 1988, 1989 and by 1990 there was a sufficient quantity of breeders seed to register this variety (as Biska creeping bentgrass) with the Plants Product Division of Agriculture Canada.  The name of the variety was changed to 18th Green in 1992.

In 1989, the Department of Plant Science and Johnson Seeds entered into an agreement assigning world-wide production and distribution rights to Johnson Seeds.

Research
18th Green has been entered in numerous research studies to assess its quality as a turf grass.  In an independent test trial in Tennessee 18th Green has shown that its high summer density remained consistent in both the extremely wet year of 1992 and the record breaking high temperatures the state endured in 1993.  Tests also showed 18th Green to have less grain than other comparable grasses as well as an extremely high resistance to Brown Patch.
