Johnson Seeds considers crop research crucial
to the maintenance and growth of its seed business. It has worked
with the University of Manitoba in the development of creeping bentgrass
seed production technologies to support the seed marketing effort
with the exclusive variety 18th
Green. Johnson Seeds has
also encouraged the development of
the forage seed industry through its sponsorship of the Manitoba Forage
Seed Association research center in Arborg, MB.
More recently, Johnson Seeds, has become active
in the breeding of new dry pea varieties. In addition to the breeding effort,
it is also actively accessing pea varieties from international variety developers.
The breeding project utilizes the resources
of a growth room and field station in Arborg, and in cooperation with the Agriculture & Agri-Food
Canada Morden Research Station has some testing done in Morden, MB.
The objective of the plant breeding effort is to develop dry pea
varieties well suited to production in Manitoba, particularly the Interlake
region. More specifically, the objectives of the PEA BREEDING
effort are to develop high yielding, lodging resistant, early maturing,
disease resistant - green and yellow, food quality; maple; and annual forage varieties.
